Outing Report Southport
Long Eaton & District Horticultural Society visit to Southport.
Our first outing of the year, was to the seaside town of Southport, just 16 miles north of Liverpool, it boasts a beautiful coastline, taking in Crosby Beach, with it's famous “100 Iron Men”, all looking out to sea in various poses.
When we reached Southport itself, members were faced with so many choices, including walking along the beach, travelling along the very long pier in the small train and of course, retail therapy. Many of the ladies chose the latter, meandering down the tree lined boulevards with the quirky, independent shops with their wrought iron canopies over the walkways, a shoppers paradise.
Some of our members discovered the Lawnmower Museum, which was something completely different, even if you are not “into” lawnmowers. The museum houses over 200 restored exhibits from the first invention, 200 years ago, to the most expensive, the fastest and includes those from the rich and famous. Even one given to Prince Charles and Diana as a wedding present!
Two of our members walked along the seafront to check on the progress of the new Lifeboat Station being built, which the society have financially supported. Construction is proceeding well and we look forward to seeing the completed building when it is in operational use.
Certainly our visit to Southport was voted a great success, with something for everyone.
