Outing Report Cholmondeley
On the last Sunday in June, our members enjoyed a visit to Cholmondeley Castle and gardens.
The early 19th century castle is surrounded by sweeping lawns, set high on a hill overlooking the lakes. The gardens have recently been completely renovated, the rose garden being completed late 2017 with 250 new roses, which were at their very best, the scent and colour a delight to the senses. The Lavinia Walk, named after the mother of the present Marquess, was planted with various plants predominately delphiniums and huge drifts of penstamons in various shades in pink, under planted with hostas. All the trees and plants seemed to be at their best, the cornus trees in the arboretum, in full flower were stunning, as was the lily pond. There was the added bonus of a Plant Hunters Fair with many unusual small trees and plenty of plants for sale, which our members took full advantage of. A wonderful garden and a super day out.
