Plans for the Centenary Year 2019

Plans are ongoing for our celebrations next year, some of which are finalised and laid out below. Other ideas are still “work in progress” and will be announced in our March 2019 Newsletter. Please let us know if you have any ideas to consider.

  1. FUCHSIA NAMED AFTER THE SOCIETY. – The Society has arranged for a fuchsia to be hybridised by John Porter of Southport. This is to be named “LE&DHS 100” subject to final approval from the British Fuchsia Society.

This process has been kindly sponsored by Lyndon and Ruth Clements. We propose to obtain cuttings for sale to interested members during March / April next year.
  2. ZONAL PELARGONIUM – FOR EXHIBITING AT THE ANNUAL SHOW. – It is intended to include in the Annual Show 2019 a class for a Zonal Pelargonium which will be purchased and be available at the March 2019 meeting.

These plants will be given to interested members for growing on in readiness to exhibit in this special class.
  3. HERITAGE CARROT SEEDS – FOR EXHIBITING AT THE ANNUAL SHOW. – One of our members, Roger Huxley, is sponsoring and providing packs of "TOUCHON" an old fashioned favourite orange carrot bred in France in the 1700s. This is a stumpy, sweet flavoured, tender and crisp carrot that does not taper. It is also quick to mature - in the region of 65 to 70 days.

This is to be grown and exhibited at the Annual Show 2019.
  4. There will be approximately 50 packs with 30 seeds per pack and they will be available at the Spring Show on the 30th March 2019. These are only for exhibiting at the show and are not for general cultivation.
  5. TEA PARTY / PICNIC – Save the date – Sunday 23rd June 2019 – 2pm to 5pm at Attenborough Village Hall. Complimentary Tea / Coffee / Birthday Cake.

One of the Society's members has agreed to play the keyboard throughout the aternoon with background music for the occasion.

    More details later.
  6. MONTHLY RAFFLE – There will be an extra prize in our monthly raffle during 2019. This will be our “Plant of the Month”  and will be chosen by Jo who organises the raffle.
  7. SPONSORSHIP OF CLASSES AT OUR ANNUAL SHOW – we would like to invite members to sponsor one or more classes at our Annual Show 2019. The prize money for most classes would be £3.25 but for collections and/or three vases or plants it would be£10 or £15.

If you are interested please see Margaret or Ruth (Show Secretaries) to organise this. We would, with your permission, publish all sponsors either in the schedule or on the notice board. We would need to know if you are interested by 1st march 2019 prior to preparing the Show Schedule.
