Gardener Steve Outing - Day Trip to The Cambridge University Botanical Garden, Saturday 22nd September

Join us for our day trip to the University of Cambridge Botanical Garden.

This heritage-listed Botanic Garden was originally conceived by Professor John Henslow, the mentor and teacher of Charles Darwin. The Garden's plant collections today number over 8000 species from all over the world, displayed within the best collection of trees in the region. The 40 acres of beautifully-landscaped gardens and glasshouses offer year-round interest and seasonal inspiration.

The Glasshouse Range can be found on the north side of the Main Lawn, and is full of year-round interest - from alpine to exotic tropical climbers - and is a real refuge on a cold day! They have been transformed in the last five years through a major restoration and replanting programme.

Garden features include Autumn colour garden, Bed of British native plants, Dry garden demonstrating planting requiring reduced watering, Fern display, Genetics garden, Herbaceous borders, Woodland and a Lake.

The beautiful Garden Café sits right at the heart of the Garden, in the Gilmour Wing of the Sainsbury Laboratory.

Light lunches including homemade soup, hot quiches and tarts and daily specials are served between 12 and 3pm. In addition filled baguettes and sandwiches are also available.

The delicious cakes are either homemade in the Café kitchen or supplied by a local Italian patisserie. The Café serves freshly ground Fair-trade coffee, a selection of teas and herbal infusions plus a choice of cold drinks and ice creams.

If time allows it is a short walk into the centre of Cambridge for a spot of sight-seeing or just to pop there for lunch.

With a full day ahead of you, your day starts off with a breakfast roll and a hot drink from the Seven Oaks Inn, Stanton By Dale which is where the coach will depart.
